Pain Treatment Toronto – R.I.C.E. Principles

Acute and chronic treatment should start as quickly as possible after an injury has occurred. The objective of acute pain treatment is primarily to prevent additional injuries and reduce bleeding and/or scar tissue built up. Effective acute pain treatment will limit swelling, the formation of scar tissue and the number of complications that can arise.

Initial Treatment Should Follow The So-Called "R.I.C.E." Principles

All activities should cease until further examination is done by our chiropractor in Toronto.

As soon as is possible, ice should be placed on the injured area and off and on for at least the first three days. The cold ice makes the blood vessels contract, thereby stopping the bleeding. Cold spray has no effect in such circumstances. The ice must not come into direct contact with the skin, which should be covered with a thin layer of, for example, elastic bandage. Ice treatment should be given for twenty minutes in each of the first three hours after injury.

Cold compresses or an elastic wrap should be applied, but not so tight as to hinder circulation. The compression bandage should be removed at night, but applied again each morning until the swelling goes down.

The injured area should be kept above the level of the heart to encourage venous flow to the heart.

Pain Treatment Toronto - Auto Accidents

Auto accidents are an unfortunate fact of life. Complicated injuries resulting from auto accidents can range from minor soft tissue to more severe injuries like whiplash, acute low back pain, broken bone and brain injury.

If left untreated, injuries from car accidents can lead to chronic problems such as, "back pain, neck pain, numbness and tingling in the arms, dizziness, insomnia, low back pain, sciatica," and other problems. Once pain becomes chronic, these physical problems become a lifelong battle of dealing with pain.

At Pain Clinic Toronto, we address your underlining problems before they leads to chronicity. Gentle methods by our pain specialists, RMT and naturopaths are utilized to address a patient's soft tissue injuries, in addition to chiropractic care. Our chiropractors working from our Toronto and Oshawa pain clinics are experienced in treating complicated motor vehicle accident injuries. In addition, they understand what insurance companies seek for cases involving patient rehabilitation from car or work accidents.

Our pain treatment clinic in Toronto will focus in addressing the root of your pain and injuries. Not only can we help your body heal from sustained injuries, but we can also prevent them from becoming chronic and long-lasting problems.

A chiropractor’s goal for patients who undergo chiropractic treatment is to help them reach optimum functional levels needed for a timely, safe return to work.

Our chiropractic services focus on musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, and how your general health is affected by these deficiencies. Every muscle, organ, and tissue in our bodies are controlled by this nervous system. If your nervous system fails or if there is something wrong, then your musculoskeletal system and spine will suffer along with the rest of your body.

Thus, seeing a chiropractor and taking advantage of chiropractic services is a great way for pain treatment such as joint pain, back pain, lower back pain, limb pain, headaches & migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, and neuromusculoskeletal. Our chiropractors have diverse diagnostic skills and are properly trained to recommend rehabilitation exercises and therapies, as well as advising on healthy lifestyles comprised of nutrition and dietary habits.

Several research studies have shown that headaches which originate from the neck along with tension headaches can be effectively treated through chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic adjustments are effective for trigger point therapy- maintaining the proper movement and positioning between the base of the skull and first cervical vertebra.

Doctors of chiropractic services practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes diligent patient examinations, diagnosis and treatments to get the nervous system and the rest of your body functioning at its best, helping the body to adjust and heal itself effectively.

At Pain Rehab Clinic, we continually strive to educate and support all our patients regarding our chiropractic services, overall health and wellness, and how this lifestyle can positively affect you and your body. Our chiropractors always listen and support our chiropractic patients on an individual patient basis, to ensure you receive the best chiropractic care tailored for your own requirements. We look forward to treating you soon.

What is Whiplash?

Our pain clinics in Toronto frequently see patients suffering from whiplash injuries from a motor vehicle accident. Needless to say, chiropractors have been a blessing to millions of people who have been undergoing pain treatment to alleviate their pain a result of whiplash injuries. Our chiropractors in Toronto and Oshawa have very effective methods in treating the symptoms of whiplash. So what exactly is a whiplash injury and how can a chiropractor help?

Whiplash is not a disease but a description of how an injury occurred. The spine, usually the head and neck, was unexpectedly thrown very quickly in one direction and then rebounded in the opposite direction. The head was “whipped around” on the neck usually from to back, but it can also happen from a side-to-side motion of the neck as well.

Where do the damages occur?

The vast majority of whiplash sufferers have misaligned spinal bones as well as nerve, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle and disc stress, irritation damage. Chiropractors have a special name to describe this type of condition: a vertebral subluxation, the most common source of pain and discomfort from whiplash.

RMT - Registered Massage Therapists

The Pain Rehab Clinic has RMT or registered massage therapists readily available to provide you with the most comprehensive and therapeutic massage therapy in Toronto, Oshawa, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, Scarborough, and across the GTA. An RMT can be trained in providing different therapy which include a deep tissue massage, sports massage, Swedish massage, pregnancy massage, cranial sacral therapy, couples massage, hot stone massage, aromatherapy massage, thai yoga massage, reiki and reflexology. An RMT can not only treat an injury through proper massage therapy, but prevent future injuries by educating and treating existing and new ailments prior to regressing to acute pain levels. All RMT professionals at our pain clinics in Toronto are certified massage therapists.

Our RMT in Toronto can help to reduce muscle tightness, swelling, maintain range of motion, improve tissue health, and mobilize stiff joints following an injury such as a fracture. If you’ve suffered an injury, massage therapy will surely and quickly help you with your recovery and healing process to rehabilitate lost range of motion.

If you’re experiencing swelling, aches, pains, or strains during the beginning or acute stages, massage therapy can help alleviate and reduce the pain, as well as treat any compensatory structures that may be experiencing additional strain. Massage therapists will also use lymphatic drainage techniques to help improve circulation and reduce pain in general. If your pain has progressed to the latter chronic stages, massage therapists can help to maintain range of motion, reduce adhesions, and reduce muscle tightness. This helps in improving tissue health as well as allowing you to return to your normal activities of daily living more easily.

Our massage therapy clinics in Toronto can help you with these injuries and reduce swelling (if present), treat the muscles surrounding the injury and those that are compensating for the injury. This means that you have less risk of the injury resulting in long-terms problems. And you will be able to return to your normal daily activities more quickly.

If you’re suffering from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, a RMT can significantly help reduce the tightness and pain experienced in the jaw muscles through proper massage therapy. Through both intra-orally and extra-orally (inside & outside your mouth) massage therapy, a RMT can help reduce jaw pain, and in some cases, permanently eliminate the pain. If you’re experiencing jaw pain when chewing (the masseter muscle), a study showed that massage therapy was effective for pain treatment. Having a weekly massage therapy can also prevent tension headaches and migraines by increasing tissue health by means of blood circulation, as well as maintaining muscle metabolic balance. Furthermore, you can also reduce stress by massaging the muscles of the neck and jaw which can possibly be a factor in TMJ dysfunction.

Pregnancy massage therapy has been shown to reduce discomfort in pregnant women as a result of a changing body. A RMT can perform a pregnancy massage which will increase blood circulation to subsequently help your body and mind relax, as well as reduce edema (swelling). Following your post pregnancy, a RMT can help tighten up your stomach (abdominals) by stimulating stretched muscles within that region, and also relax strained muscles (as a result of your preganancy) such as your lower back pain. But aside from therapeutic approaches, which mom or any person for that matter doesn’t want a RMT to give them an amazing, relaxing massage?

A common benefit which we all have experienced at one point is that a RMT can also help reduce your lower back pain which can be a result of a work-related injury, prolonged sitting, sport injury, and lifting heavy objects. A study found that patients suffering from chronic and sub-acute lower back pain had benefited from massage therapy. Moreover, if the RMT combined massage therapy and exercise, the results were even more effective. The benefits from massage therapy treatment have been consistently outlined in numerous medical studies for years. One beneficial example of massage therapy is treating fibromyalgia because it reduces swelling, stiffness, pain, decreases anxiety and stress, and improves your sleep. By having a RMT treat you with a frequent massage therapy, your body will thank you as you will prevent and avoid future injuries.

Naturopath Doctors - Naturopathic medicine, Health & Wellness

The Pain Rehab Clinic offers patients the services of a naturopath doctor who will combine natural forms of medicine and modern scientific knowledge which we call, “naturopathic medicine.” Our naturopath doctors are readily available to treat your health conditions in Toronto, Oshawa, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, Scarborough, and across the GTA.

A naturopath doctor’s general philosophy is to treat the underlying causes of any disease by stimulating the natural healing power of the body itself. Naturopathic medicine considers diseases and symptoms of disease as initial warning signs of a poor lifestyle and bad habits, and as a result, an improperly functioning system (i.e. you body). Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity.

Naturopathic assessments and treatments are always carried out on an individual basis, in order to effectively treat patients who suffer from both chronic and acute conditions. A naturopath doctor will determine a patient’s treatment based on lifestyle and environmental factors such as their structural, psychological, physiological, spiritual, and social well being. In addition to changes in lifestyle and diet, a naturopath doctor will also include natural therapies such as hydrotherapy, homeopathy, traditional chinese medicine, chinese acupuncture, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, and naturopathic manipulation.

A naturopath doctor will use naturopathic medicine to treat many forms of health issues and concerns. They range from acute to chronic illness, irritating internal systems, from pediatric to geriatric treatments, and from a physical to psychological approach. It is this philosophical approach and naturopath training which sets apart a naturopathic doctor from other forms of medical health care.

A naturopath doctor will generally have three types of patients seeking naturopathic treatments:

1. Patients who are looking for alternative medicine treatments as a result of being diagnosed with an illness. For those that have serious to life threatening diseases and illnesses, naturopathic medicine can effectively improve the quality of life for many patients. A naturopath doctor will combine naturopathic treatments with conventional medicine aiming to minimize the side effect of surgery, conventional treatments, and pharmaceutical drugs.

2. Patients experiencing a wide array of symptoms in which they believe their medical doctors have not been able to help address accurately, or the patient is simply looking for alternative opinions. A naturopath doctor is able to provide a patient with new perspectives on their health because of the educational curriculum involving naturopathic medicine which includes a broad understanding of one’s health, and the relationship it shares with the environment and life. Hence, a naturopathic doctor can provide effective and safe alternative therapies to restore or increase the well being of a patient.

3. Patients who are seeking strategies to promote good healthy lifestyles and to prevent diseases. People who understand the basis behind naturopathic medicine will realize that optimum health is not an overnight miracle nor process, but rather a long-term lifestyle which is based upon naturopathic education and daily practical applications. A naturopath doctor will suggest ways to deal with everyday health issues, and treat them. Patients seeking to promote their health at a higher level is increasing tremendously.

The naturopath doctor’s philosophy is to treat the root causes of disease and illness by stimulating the body’s own healing power. For many alternative medicine patients, this unique approach to overall health provides them with awareness and a new perspective. Through the use of natural alternative therapies and by targeting the root causes of disease, many patients with chronic illness have found tremendous benefits from the services of a naturopath doctor.

In our Toronto pain clinics, our naturopath doctors are all certified from accredited naturopathic medicine academic institutions, are licensed, abide by national standards of practice, and are committed to scientific research.
